Master Steel provided repair works for Sea World’s Storm Coaster attraction. Welding process 111 or manual metal arc welding (MMA or MMAW) had to be done to address the cracks found on the low carbon steel tracks of the park’s ride. Also known as shielded metal arc welding, MMA uses a flux-coated electrode. It is commonly used on low carbon steel and most suitable for repair and maintenance jobs.
In order to repair the defect, the affected area has to be cleaned to the bare metal. The crack is grinded out completely from the start to the end position. The removal of the crack is then confirmed through magnetic particle testing (MT). Weld work is then performed, ensuring that the final weld is notch-free. After 24 hours since completing the weld work, NDT inspection is conducted through visual inspection (VT) by MT according to DIN EN 17638, with the acceptance level 1 according to DIN EN ISO 23278.
Storm Coaster is a water coaster ride which is the park’s largest feature. Designed by MACK Rides, it is a cross between a log flume ride and steel roller coaster. The tallest point of the ride stands at 28 metres and runs as fast as 70 km/h.
Master Steel has been a proud supplier of Village Roadshow Theme Parks and is the preferred steel fabricator for repair and maintenance of Queenslanders’ favourite rides and attractions.
